Selected March 2012 Trainees

Hello,

I applied for the translation traineeship and I've been informed that I'll be starting a traineeship at the DGT in the English Language Department in March. I'd love to hear from other March 2012 EC trainees who are interested in meeting up for a coffee in Brussels in February/March or in sharing an apartment for the 5 months.

About me: I'm British, 25 years old, currently living in Germany, I work as a translator, and I speak - to varying degrees - French, Spanish, German and Portuguese, and English of course!

I have not yet been selected, however, remaining hopeful, I started doing some research on accommodation opportunities in Brussels, and in case of shared houses (such as Van Orley Student House) they usually insist that one stays for at least 6 months ;( Otherwise, one is required to pay almost double the monthly rent, which is simply too much for me ;(

So I'm wondering now, whether it makes more sense to pay them one additional monthly rate (and not use it) or perhaps explore other options (such as private apartments).

What' your opinion?

First of all, congratulations for your achievement, Trainee_March2012!
I also applied for DG Translation, but no answer until now. I should start to worry, but on the other hand, I must also take into account that my application will be revised by the Romanian team at DGT. Therefore, the procedure and timing might be somewhat different compared to those of other delegations.
I became a certified translator and interpreter for English in september this year (unfortunately after sending the application to Brussels), and now I am collaborating with some translation houses. At least for the October 2012 session I'll have a stronger background.

Thank you Raluca_M! I wouldn't worry, they told me that I was one of the first to be selected and that they still have loads of people to select and notify. Plus I've been assigned to terminology, which is probably why I found out earlier than expected. Congratulations on your certification and best of luck.

I think you are right Ossory, that 6 months will probably have to be the minimum rental period. I'm probably going to look for a private apartment, which is why I would like to share with some other trainees.

I was informed a couple of weeks ago that I have been selected for the translation traineeship, too I'm going to be in Luxembourg, though. I would also like to find others to share an apartment.
I'm (almost) 24, just finishing my university studies at the end of January.

Any news on EEAS? Just because DG Enlargement contacted with a concrete proposal, but earlier this week two EEAS units generaly also showed interest in my profile. So I wondering now if I should wait for a response from EEAS, or not. Difficult...

Hi tina1985. I got a phone call and then an email because I missed their phone call. I wouldn't worry, I think every language unit does it at their own pace.

Congratulations niki988! I'm actually moving from Luxembourg (well, actually over the border in Trier) to Brussels, so I'll let you know if I hear of anyone wanting to share an apartment in Luxembourg. If you need any info on Luxembourg don't hesitate to ask.

@jos85: I ve done some lobbying with EEAS (mail at 6 divisions). Only Multilateral affairs responded telling me they would let me know were they attributed a trainee. No further contact from any unit. Have you contacted any Division? Did they respond? I got no clue which of the Divisions will take a trainee. Having a proposal from Enlarg is a good opportunity to risk it.. I would appreciate sharing any info. Wish you good luck!

Hi jos85 & panos, the EEAS Divisions which have responded to me are as follows:

Japan, Korea, Australia & New Zealand: Not taking trainees.
India, Nepal & Bhutan: Not taking trainees.
Multilateral Affairs: Will inform candidates once selected.
Global Issues: Will inform candidates once selected.

I also lobbied another 4 Divisions, but no response.

to Niki 988, I was also selected for DGT in Luxembourg and starting 01.03. It is very difficult to find private place to live in Luxembourg for reasonable price. I contacted one agency already, but all they could offer were places for about 750 per month...

Panos in the end the proposal was cancelled as somebody with some contacts lobbied himself in.

Likewise on EEAS. I must say it is really quite on that front. So hopefully their selections process is still ongoing.

I've been also selected for DG Justice, which was my first choice, so I'm really happy! I did some lobby, but I also got phone calls froms DGs that I did not even selected, so I think that selection really depends on each DG criteria!

I also got an unofficial offer from DG INFSO so i am waiting to receive the official one!!!

Congratulations Notturna! I received a phone call from DG INFSO for an informal interview but the woman just asked me if I was still interested for a traineeship in the EC. She told me that she had added my name on a shortlist of their favourite candidates. But, from what I have read on this forum, DG INFSO seems to make unofficial offer, so I guess that if I had been finally chosen, they would have send me an unofficial offer.
We will see on january but I don't think I will be lucky...

Hi all, today I have received an e-mail asking me to choose among three offers I have received and to answer them which is my first choice which will be formally offered. Today is last day for choosing trainees.

If it were, they would have set the official final date as "end of December" and not "mid-January".

They told me that during the interview... Deadline for units to choose their candidates is today. But the final offer is until mid-January.

I've been selected for the traineeship in the DG SCIC!! Just received the offer from the T.O. I'm so happy!!!

So now it's time to look for accomodation in Brussels. I see that some of you already posted "calls for roomates" I want to share an appartment too so let me know if you're interested (I guess any location around Ixelles or Etterbeek would be good).

I'm 25 years old Polish girl with professional background in arts and culture, languages, humanities. I speak English, Spanish, French and Polish. I'm sociable, easy going and peaceful

One question for non-EU nationals. Did you need to go through "Security checks"? They told me I am their priority but as a non-EU national security checks are necessary and I will be informed if I successfully passed them. So far I didn't get any info and that was 10 days ago. Checks are performed my DG EAC.
