I've called the Unit and they told me that they are sorry but they don't know yet if they can keep a trainee I don't understand what does that exactly mean but obviously I'm out!

Dear yusc, last year I was in the same situation you are now, so I can explain it a little bit to you, at least from my perspective for October 2012, I was interviewed by a unit; after that they told that I passed the interview and they will select me. I was really happy... but after a couple of weeks, before receiving the official selection email, the called me to tell me that they contacted the traineeships office and the people from there told them that their unit does not receive a trainee position for October 2012 and they can`t select me (this is because of the budget, and to make sure that every unit gets a trainee at least once a year). You can imagine my disappointment. But they encouraged me to apply again for March 2013, I did and this time they got a trainee position and selected me. So this is a warning for all possible future trainees, even though a unit wants you, the traineeships office has the last word, as they have to gather every unit`s choice and the hardest thing is to respect the countries quotas. I hope this helps you understand a little the process and I encourage you to apply again.

Once again yusc, I am so sorry! What a dissapointment must be for you, after waiting so long.

But I would suggest the same as raluca, apply again! This time was not about you, it is just the stupid money and the budget.

mdenic85: thank you so much for your support! Yes, at least I know that it is not about me, I was just a little bit unlucky because of other things but I hope that for October 2013 things are going to go better

Congrats to all of us who got in! I am from Bosnia and I've been selected for the Legal Service. See you all in a month:)

Btw, I also had a bad experience. After the selection I was interviewed by DG COMP and afterwards they informed me that they have selected me and I only had to wait for the official e-mail. A week later the called me again and apologized because they couldn't offer me the position. They have been told by the TO that they couldn't take any candidates from third countries (candidates not coming from the EU or candidate countries). I was so disappointed!
Luckily, the story had a happy end. I was finally selected for an even better unit- even tough I have never lobbied for the Legal Service!

The conclusion- one should not rely on informal confirmations. The official e-mail is all that counts.
