Hi Aneena,
did you sit the exam last year? can you tell me how it was and what tips you have?
Also, if you know of any materials for preparation, I would appreciate it.
Thank you, and looking forward to hearing from you,
Alice

I did the exam last year and it was horrible, so this year I didn't even try. I spent some 8h in the examination centre, you have a booklet of some 40 pages with plenty of questions, many of which I didn't even understand (but to be honest I only spent some 2h preparing going through my notes from the university). And then out of 5000 people only 50 or something like that make it to the second stage. With no differentiation on origin. I really didn't like it.
My tip - I had a feeling the exam was made for people who already had experience working for the UN. One of the questions asked you to prepare some kind of document (no clue what it was) that sounded like a standard internal UN procedure. So I would find somebody who works for the UN and ask a million questions, or do an internship, or in some other way get well acquainted with the organisation.
I also just remembered one of the questions in the preparatory questions set from previous years (or maybe a real question from the last year??) asked about a particular rule from the Staff Regulations. I know some rules of the staff regulations of the European Commission since I worked there and attended trainings on this topic, but I have no clue how on earth a fresh graduate with no UN experience can answer this kind of questions.
Also there you need to memorise plenty of facts, numbers and figures concerning UN as there is a part in the exam that just asks for that. Questions like "what is the name of the program in **** launched in year ****" or "how many ****" - pure memory game.
In this respect I think EPSO is much better, as it is testing mainly general skills and motivation and having insider experience is not a prerequisite.

Thanks for writing Aneena! From what I have come across through my research on this topic, it seems that the exam is really hard. You just confirmed that its super hard. :/
There is a lot of material to be studied by the UN, but could you please if you remember some other topics from last year to write them down?
even other forums, or blogs on YPP will be very wecomed.
Best!

Do you have to be pre-selected to even have a possibility to do the test?
Does anyone know how many applicants each year are pre-selected for this?
