Lobbying with units - Page 2 Empty Re: Lobbying with units

Mon Dec 10, 2012 10:20 am
Ok I just decided to send an email to the general DG ENERGY email they provided and this was the reply:
Dear candidate,

Thank you for your e-mail and for your interest in our DG. Please note that our Directorates choose their candidates directly in the Blue Book, according to their needs.

When our choice of candidates is made, we send our list of requested candidates to the Traineeship office who will then send the official training offer to the finally selected candidates.

As mentioned in the mail that the Traineeship Office has sent you, their offer is the only official and valid offer.

I wish you success in obtaining a traineeship,
Best regards,
MOVE-ENER SRD 2

Does this mean that lobbying with separate units makes no sense or will that still help?

Hi guys Smile

So, I've read that quite a lot of us have been approached by some of the Units.. not me, of course! No Is there someone else who hasn't got any news yet?
Can I ask you who are you lobbying? I mean which DGs.. Mine are BEPA, SG, DEVCO, FPI, HR, EMPL, ECHO, ENERGY... quite a lot, but still no interviews.. Neutral

Well.

First time I was pre-selected, I didn't lobby following the logical train of thought that my info and motivation is already there and if interested DGs will let me know . It didn't work for me and I felt ''guilty'' I didn't even try when heard about others that lobbied and got at least a reply.
This time I started lobbying, 3 letter over the weekend and got a rather confusing mail:
Dear blue book candidate,

Thank you for your email informing us that you have passed the pre-selection stage, for which we congratulate you.

I note that you wish to have a traineeship within DG Research and Innovation. However, as the selection of candidates is under way, we are not in a position at this stage to be able to guarantee a traineeship in this Directorate General.

If you pass the final selection stage, the Traineeships Office will send you a contract for a traineeship either with us or in another Directorate General. If, however, you have not received word by February for the period beginning in March 2013, you may consider that your application has not been successf
ul.{......}

Well again, what do they mean by ''if you pass the final selection stage''? Aren't DGs doing it now? Does it mean that it's ok with them but they have wait till the whole procedure is formally over? And if so, why other DG have already picked their candidates?
I would appreciate any comment and thought especially if you got similar replies.

Hi davinya! I haven't received any news yet either. No calls, no e-mails. Not even an automatic e-mail reply. I sent e-mails to units in EEAS, DEVCO, ECHO, and Trade.

Neither have I, no calls nor e-mails. I haven't lobbied yet cos I am not very desperate for this traineeship but out of curiosity I will do today. Just want to check if lobbying will change anything...
Will let you know if it does.

Hi everyone!
I am sure you guys are not the only ones who haven't received any reply yet... (including myself). I believe there are still a lot of candidates like us out there.
I spent 3 emails to 3 units of DG COMM, and I was trying to be very specific about my interests in terms of what suits my academic profile. Now I am thinking of sending out some more emails, because I worry as time passes by, and still nothing. On the other hand, I keep telling myself to be more patient, but this waiting is really painful.

I think there is no uniformity in what the DG's do.. some already picked candidates, some might have not even started the selection process. Some might be responsive to the lobby letters, some may not... some will come back to you confirming they have selected you, some may not and you will know nothing until mid-January. I think the obscurity is huge regarding this whole process and it is frustrating. Fingers crossed for you guys and of course, congratulations to those who have already been interviewed.

I think we should know that not every DG has the same policy regarding the selection of trainees. Some choose immediately and let you know right away, some leave to HR to let you know. Also, not all Units have a placement for a trainee. So, we should not think if someone got contacted by for example DG COM, that we should also be contacted right away by our preferable trainee. It would be good, I admit... but it is still not crucial.

BEPA also seems to send an auto-reply (from the general e-mail that the traineeships office provided):

"Dear trainee candidate, Thank you for your e-mail. DG BEPA is now examining the CVs of the pre-selected candidates for a traineeship at the European Commission. In case they are interested in your application, they will contact you in order to check your availability and your interest in their service. If you are selected for a traineeship in one of our services, you will receive an official offer from the Traineeships Office. Given the huge number of applicants, we would be grateful if in the meantime you would refrain from contacting the Human Resources or the concerned units. Regards, BEPA"

Hi guys,
I'm kinda late in the lobbying game, I'm trying not to beat myself up too much and I'll do my best to be sending them tonight so they can be read tomorrow morning. However, I am a bit confused about the situation with External Action. Are they a part of the EC or independent? I looked up on their organizational chart and it showed some unit to be responding directly to the High Representative. Moreover, when you look up the EC Staff Directory, there is no External Action there.
In the email for preselection however there was a general email of their HR. So, are they are clearly involved? but what units? and where do we get contact details?

I really appreciate the info

Here http://europa.eu/about-eu/institutions-bodies/index_en.htm it is listed as a different institution from the European commission. External Action is the last one on the list. So I think it is not part of EC.
They have this trainneeship programme: http://eeas.europa.eu/delegations/jed/index_en.htm but are only 2 places/ country. I tried but I was not accepted..

Actually, it is part of the EC.

The other traineeship programme you mention is in EU delegations, not in Brussels.

Actually, you are talking about two different things I think.
There is one programme Junior Proffesionals in Delegations (separate application through national contact point - usually ministry of foreign affaires) - that one is to the delegations of EEAS in the different countries and it is for 9-18 months. This traineeship has EEAS trainees and EC trainees, but both in delegations.
And then there is our Commission, where I think as a part of the Commission traineeship, you can be a trainee at the EEAS headquarters.
At least that´s how I understand it.

Lobbying with units - Page 2 Empty Re: Lobbying with units

One of the units in DG EMPL put in a request for me the day after the Blue Book was released. I've also received an email from Directorate D, who said they want me, but will give me a call this week to talk about my preferred unit. So I guess I have a choice. I "lobbied", as I know a bunch of people at DG EMPL. I am currently working in Brussels on a project of DG EMPL, so I am in contact with people from different units over there.

The administrative procedures are a bit annoying, as I would like to have a guarantee (i.e., a signed contract) as soon as possible. I have a contract laying on my desk for the traineeship at the CoR, which I will turn down, but not before I am 100% certain that DG EMPL works.

I just received a call from ECHO, but it was just 3-5 mins long. They asked me if I was still available, because they wanted to know before they started further looking into applicants. She also mentioned that she couldn't say when they'd select trainees, but that they had just started the process. She knows my interests and was wondering if I would like to work on other regions apart from Latin America (my specialisation). And she mentioned a lot of times that this was just to check availability and did not mean that I would get a placement.

P.S. I lobbied to the Latin America and Asia unit!

Finally said that she will suggested me to HoU. When I asked her, if this is like an unofficial offer, she said YES! Does it mean I am almost IN? I m just getting crazy, it kills me :-/

Actually it was about what members of the unit do and I was madly nervous, so I do not really remember..:-) well, some questions were just general about the policy of the enlargement, but others were really concrete. I was realizing that correct answer is just necessary. Hope, I did. Otherwise, thanks lilix!

Has anyone received any further information from DG ENER, RTD or EEAS (especially the Russia unit)? So far I have only seen one lucky person who was interviewed on these forums. While I have lobbied several units, it seems I am also one of the unlucky ones who is not being reached.

I received 3 mails from RTD from 3 different units that unfortunately they don't have a trainee appointed to their unit (nice that head of units answered personally). The same with one unit in CNECT.
